First Week of School:4-5

Welcome Back! 7 Habits Week!

1. Introduce ourselves - First name/animal name- Unique Monique

2. Using the website How many of me are there? to find out about everyone's name...

3. In our school we are Leaders and Learners. We use the 7 Habits: This week's habit is: Be Proactive!

Talk to the students about what it means to Be Proactive: taking initiative, taking responsibility for your actions and emotions, and focusing on things you can do something about. Discuss how being proactive can be helpful every day—at home and at school. What are some behaviors that would show you are being proactive? As the students brainstorm a list, write the behaviors on the board.

Review Habit 1: Be Proactive.  Part of being proactive is to be in control of your actions and emotions.

Stopping to think before they act will allow them to be more in control and have better relationships.

Show students the pop bottle and water bottle.  Discuss how shaking a pop bottle will make it explode; this is similar to a reactive person. Reactive people let their emotions control their actions—they “explode” often. Shake the water bottle and explain that the water bottle is like a proactive person—no matter what happens to them, they remain calm and do not let their emotions control their actions. Proactive people stop and think about what they should do before they act. Using a Plus/Delta Leadership Tool, lead the students through a discussion of the positive/negative outcomes of using reactive vs. proactive language.

Reactive people say things like, “I can’t,” “I have to,” and “You make me.” Proactive people say things like “I choose to,” “I can do better,” and “I’ll do it.”

Teacher says, “ I am Proactive.  I am in charge of myself, I can help others, and do the right thing even when no one is looking.”

“ I found trash on the ground so I am going to put it into the trashcan.  I am proactive.”  The teacher acts out picking up trash and ends with stating, “I am proactive!”

Teacher asks for students to work in pairs to come up with two proactive scenarios in the classroom,

school, or home.
